From the author of One of Us Is Lying comes a brand-new pulse-pounding thriller。 It's Ferris Bueller's Day Off with murder when three old friends relive an epic ditch day, and it goes horribly--and fatally--wrong。

Ivy, Mateo, and Cal used to be close。 Now all they have in common is Carlton High and the beginning of a very bad day。

Type A Ivy lost a student council election to the class clown, and now she has to face the school, humiliated。 Heartthrob Mateo is burned out--he's been working two jobs since his family's business failed。 And outsider Cal just got stood up 。 。 。 again。

So when Cal pulls into campus late for class and runs into Ivy and Mateo, it seems like the perfect opportunity to turn a bad day around。 They'll ditch and go into the city。 Just the three of them, like old times。 Except they've barely left the parking lot before they run out of things to say 。 。 。

。 。 。 until they spot another Carlton High student skipping school--and follow him to the scene of his own murder。 In one chance move, their day turns from dull to deadly。 And it's about to get worse。

It turns out Ivy, Mateo, and Cal still have some things in common。 They all have a connection to the dead kid。 And they're all hiding something。

Overall the book was really good, It had strong character development, lots of plot twists, and was filled with relatable people。 I felt like it could have spent a little bit more time really diving into the murder and trying to explore more about the "Why"。 But it kept you wanting to read more with lots of revelations and cliffhangers。 I felt like you really got to know the characters which I found made the book more emotional and meaningful to the reader which I really enjoyed。 If you are look Overall the book was really good, It had strong character development, lots of plot twists, and was filled with relatable people。 I felt like it could have spent a little bit more time really diving into the murder and trying to explore more about the "Why"。 But it kept you wanting to read more with lots of revelations and cliffhangers。 I felt like you really got to know the characters which I found made the book more emotional and meaningful to the reader which I really enjoyed。 If you are looking for a good exiting young adult murder mystery I would 100% recommend this book。 。。。more

Karen McManus has done it again! She knows how to share teenage characters who have depth and complex personalities。 It makes the audience want to read one chapter more every time。 I can understand how her novels are being turned into tv series。 The writing lends itself to the screen。 Another success for Karen McManus!

I liked the books a lot。 Did i love it as much as i expected to no。 It’s still a good book and if you like the rest of her books you will like this one as well。 I didn’t love it like The cousins or one of us is lying。 The mystery in this book i found less intriguing than in her other books and it didn’t keep me captivated like her other books did。 The 3 characters were great and pretty reliable (action wise)。 I think this is a 3。5-4 star read。

Did I read this entire book in one sitting while ignoring everything else I had to do today? Yes。 Was it worth it? Also yes。 This is by far McManus's best book。 It was perfectly paced, considering most of the plot happens in just one day, I loved all the main characters equally, they were fleshed out, complex, and the humor mixed in with bite-your-nails thrilling moment were all *chef's kiss* And don't even get me started on that ending。 I'm hoping for a sequel just to see Ivy go scorched earth Did I read this entire book in one sitting while ignoring everything else I had to do today? Where do I even begin?😫Inevitably, Karen McManus has become an instant buy for me。 And yet, I still cannot comprehend the obsessed state her page turning novels throw me into every time I read a new book - and this just added to the list。READ。 IT。 NOW。 That’s all, thank you — I’m gonna lay down and sleep now and comprehend how good this plot was😭

Each of them has a connection to what has occurred。。。。。McManus gives us lots of choices for the whodunit。 The final aha won't be overly hard to suss out, but it's the journey there that's the most fun。 And I did have fun reading this one。 Ferris Bueller with a side of Scooby Doo。 McManus has a formula that works - and she had me happily ensconced on the couch for on rainy Saturday afternoon。 。。。more

General ImpressionsI think I saw the author describe You'll Be the Death of Me as Ferry Bueller's Day Off with murder and it's absolutely right。This was my second story by Karen M。 Macmanus after The Cousins which I thought was good but not enough to justify how adored the author is。 I started this book as my second chance to be amazed and reader, I was。When three teens decide to cut class together, it's more than a way to try to reconnect after years of drifting apart or repeat the day that mad General ImpressionsI think I saw the author describe You'll Be the Death of Me as Ferry Bueller's Day Off with murder and it's absolutely right。This was my second story by Karen M。 Macmanus after The Cousins which I thought was good but not enough to justify how adored the author is。 I started this book as my second chance to be amazed and reader, I was。When three teens decide to cut class together, it's more than a way to try to reconnect after years of drifting apart or repeat the day that made them friends in the first place but an excuse to avoid their lives for a day。 Unfortunately, some of their problems had the same idea and they come across the body of another student which could spell trouble for all of them in different ways。 They are then forced to embark on a search for clues that can exonerate them before their parents hear about it。Despite that short summary, this is not the kind of story where everyone has useless parents and has to fend off by themselves, it's just that the action is packed in a single day and they are unaware of the stakes at play, thinking their parent's reaction and punishment is the worst that can happen。Something I noticed in The Cousins and that maintained itself here was that the author features inequality, sexism, homophobia and sexism without making them the focus of her story, which I really liked。 Instead, she simply portrays them as factors that can influence or derail a situation in different ways depending on the character: a cop or security guard is not a problem for the white characters but when their POC friend is with them they all have to make sure he doesn't become a target or if the worst happens, is not the one blamed for everything。 At the same time, they have to discard their own prejudices in search of the truth。The biggest reason I devoured this book was the way the three main characters interacted。 Karen is a master of writing people that like each other but might not understand why other people don't have the same options they have: a character from a rich family isn't aware of their privilege when it comes to simply not having to worry about money。 Those misunderstandings and initial lack of communication resulted in characters being tentative and resorting to manipulation or outright threats in order to force the others to help them。 So the reader is forced to watch these characters struggling between being kind and supportive to people they still care for and convincing the others they have a common goal by whichever means necessary。The nerve-wracking nature of that situation creates pressure enough that all kinds of secrets come to the surface which will ultimately decide their future when it comes to the murder and their personal relationships。 The story was able to balance the nostalgia for simpler times with a desire to grow up and make the right decisions to solve their problems。Lastly, while this book features a lot of important themes I would like to focus on a single one: the presence of a sexual predator and the way that their looks and gender influenced the way they were seen throughout the story。 I liked that the author portrayed both the way the victim and other people saw the incident differently, depending on their own beliefs and prejudices but also made the reader question and judge the situation for themselves。ConclusionsI devoured this book and can now call myself a Macmanus' fan without reserve。 I need a sequel and movie adaptation for tomorrow because that ending was all I needed。 For now, the 'One of Us is Lying' tv series will have to do, I guess。Thank you to Penguin UK for sending me this proof。Rating: 4。5/5 。。。more

It kills me to not enjoy a Karen McManus book, but I did not like this book。 At all。 The characters were flat and boring, and the plot was overly convoluted but still managed to be kind of boring。 I was tempted to DNF but wanted to see it through to the end, just in case something amazing happened。 It did not。McManus is still an auto-read author for me, but this book was not my jam。* thanks to Random House Children’s / Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the eARC。 This comes out November 30, 2021。

Like there's still hope for these kids, and even if they've done something dumb, or wrong, they can still turn things around。Well: these kids have done some VERY DUMB THINGS between the three of them。 Cal, Ivy and Mateo have all done some things they know are wrong。 The three of them basically ride the Exploding Secrets Merry-Go-Round for most of the book。 The beginning is a little boring, but I'd say by about 40% in I was completely along for the ride。 I was the most sympathetic towards Mateo, who at least did his "wrong thing" for what he thought were good reasons。 All three kids did make amends for their dumb choices eventually。 I really appreciated that the police made it VERY CLEAR to them that everything that happened to them could pretty much have been avoided if they had just reported to authorities instead of bumbling around like the Scooby gang。 No kidding! I really don't want to spoil anything so I won't get specific about the plot, but I'll say this: if you can make it past the dragging beginning, you are in for a terrific ride! Another sure-fire hit from Ms。 McManus。 。。。more

The day plays out from each character's point of view and you see that each of them have something to hide that may have led up to the days events。 There is plenty of backstories here also, Mateo and Ivy's relationship with their families。 Cal's relationship with a woman。 I love the relationship between the three。 Even though they have not hung out together in years, there are moments when you can see just how close they were。 The small details that they seem to only know about each other。 I can not thank #Netgalley and the publisher enough for the opportunity to read this。 。。。more

I will continue to read Karen M McManus’ books but this was probably my least favourite so far。 The bulk of the story felt really slow moving and all the action seemed to happen right at the end。 What I will say is that the twist was not a predictable one so that’s definitely a positive with this one。 If you’re a fan of McManus I would still say this is worth a read。

Here's the difficulty with reviewing Karen McManus books; her first book was so amazing, so clever and fantastic, it set the bar really, really high。 So books like this, that if written by anyone else would be brilliant, just - feel a bit of a let down。 Still really clever, well done, great insights into characters, but just - not as good。 Which is unfair to Karen, because this really is good。As often happens, it took me a while to tell the characters apart。 Once I got them down, though, I enjoy Here's the difficulty with reviewing Karen McManus books; her first book was so amazing, so clever and fantastic, it set the bar really, really high。 So books like this, that if written by anyone else would be brilliant, just - feel a bit of a let down。 Still really clever, well done, great insights into characters, but just - not as good。 Which is unfair to Karen, because this really is good。As often happens, it took me a while to tell the characters apart。 Once I got them down, though, I enjoyed the different points of view。 It is a good way to show different parts of the same story unfolding。 The story flew by quickly as I wanted to find out what was going to happen and whodunnit。Spoiler: I was disappointed to see that I couldn't have figured out whodunnit, as none of the characters ever interacted with them。 It feels a little bit like a cheat。 However maybe other people did figure it out - kudos if you did!I enjoyed this very much and I'm looking forward to seeing what Karen does next - I know there's a sequel to Lying coming along, but hopefully the one after that will be a sequel to this one! I can't wait to see what happens next。 。。。more

As in The Cousins, You’ll Be The Death of Me features three protagonists: A-grade student Ivy has just lost the student council election to the class clown despite years of organising school initiatives; girl-crazy Cal has just been stood up by his latest crush; and hard-working Mateo just needs a break – he’s been burned out working two jobs ever since his Mom got sick and the family business went under。So when the three former best friends bump into each other, they decide to stage a repeat of As in The Cousins, You’ll Be The Death of Me features three protagonists: A-grade student Ivy has just lost the student council election to the class clown despite years of organising school initiatives; girl-crazy Cal has just been stood up by his latest crush; and hard-working Mateo just needs a break – he’s been burned out working two jobs ever since his Mom got sick and the family business went under。So when the three former best friends bump into each other, they decide to stage a repeat of their Middle School escapade – the ‘Best Day Ever’ – and skip school together for one last time。 When a fellow student is murdered, however, the ‘Best Day Ever’ soon turns into a nightmare。 Ivy, Cal, and Mateo all have their reasons for disliking Brian ‘Boney’ Mahoney – and, as they day turns ever more deadly – all three have secrets to hide that might just be the death of them。Whilst You’ll Be The Death of Me doesn’t deviate too far from McManus’s trademark formula: teen angst, deadly secrets, and a dash of budding romance; there is a strong element of ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it’ here。 McManus does what she does SO well that fans of her previous books are sure to adore You’ll be The Death of Me with the same fervour。Whilst I initially didn’t like Ivy, Cal, and Mateo all that much, I gradually warmed to the three teens as the book went on。 Yes, each of them is a bundle of teenage angst but, to be fair, each of them has challenges to deal with。 Ivy is trying to find her place amidst her high-achieving family, Mateo wants to help his Mom, and Cal just wants to fit in。 Their vulnerabilities and anxieties are woven throughout the story and provide a strong emotional pull to the narrative。The ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with murders’ premise is utterly genius and McManus makes the most of its potential here, offering up plenty of suspects and a wider, all-encompassing plot that kept me guessing until the final pages。 The ending also has a real sting in the tail – and possibly sets up events for a continuation – and, whilst not exactly ‘happily every after’ had a realistic feel that suited the story well。 There’s also some poignant reflections on growing up and moving on that will resonate with readers of any age。Whilst I didn’t love the characters or the high school setting quite as much as the atmospheric island of The Cousins, You’ll Be The Death of Me soon drew me in with its brilliant premise, page-turning plot, and regular twists and turns。 Fans of McManus will find her latest novel just as compelling as her last, whilst those new to her work could do far worse than starting with this solid YA thriller。NB: This review appears on my blog https://theshelfofunreadbooks。wordpre。。。 as part of the Blog Tour for the book。 My thanks go to the publisher and to NetGalley UK for providing an ecopy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased review。 。。。more

This book deserves 10 stars!!! This author is the best YA writer by miles - no one can hold a candle to her superb characters and excellent storylines。 I am so hopeful that the rumour that this is the start of another series is true as these characters have so much left to tell。
